Broaching-an art of precision machining

A broach is essentially a piece of metal with stipulated dimensions. From simple key holes to complicated blind-hole appliances; small or big, a broaching solution is developed to achieve precision in machining.  It is usually manufactured from a single piece of metal which is needed for specific   jobs with strong metals like iron, aluminum, titanium, etc. Usually they are carved using pre-defined paper drawing and dimensions which defines the size and shape of broach that is to be carved out of a single piece metal. This design is then changed into a format readable by computer software which is essentially CNC (Computer Numerical Control) software.  The software does exactly what it is programmed to do.

When the coordinates are entered in the software the values are analyzed the software carves the single piece metal into a broach of the desired dimensions. When the broach is ready, it is sent to industries for the purpose of broaching. Broaching is basically a machining process that uses a toothed tool, which is the broach, to broach metals for clients who are mainly large scale device manufacturers and want precise tooling from broach manufacturers. Now with increased industrialization and emergence of new industries, broach tools are of great importance and necessity. It is used in many areas of manufacturing like tools production industries, utility industries and even in automobile industries and aviation industry. With the advent of computerized designing broaching has become quite easy. Broaching is actually of two types, linear and rotational.

These refer to the direction in which the broach is moved against the metal. In broaching, the broach is either pushed or pulled over or through a surface of the metal. A thin slice from broaching of inside surface is called internal broaching and outside surface is referred to as surface broaching. Characteristics such as the size and chip handling determine whether a pull-up or a pull-down broach should be used. In both processes the cut is done in one pass of the broach, which makes it very efficient. The locks that we attach to our doors are actually products of broaching. The various processes like cutting metal pieces, drilling holes in surfaces and for doing many other industrial works in the field of manufacturing use broaches.  Broach manufacturers employ engineering experts who are good at designing the metal-working tool. Broaching is an essential part of any manufacturing industry which aids in the cutting and shaping process of the tools according to the specifications given.

Broaches

The only limitations on broaching are that the geometry to be cut does not have curves in multiple planes and the work piece has to be strong enough to withstand the forces involved. The main advantages of broaching are its high cutting performance, reproducibility, level of automation and dimensional accuracy. Broaching machines are based on simple kinematics that require very low control and have a very sturdy design. Since broaching is a technique that offers a great precision it is often used to make unusually shaped unique pieces.
